by Cyril Browne

Backtracking Through Georgetown, a dynamic novel by Cyril Browne, reflects on life in Georgetown, Guyana, and the events that took place there from the early 1950s through the early 1970s, which is when the author immigrated to Brooklyn, New York. The novel narrates events in clear, chronological sequence, and it focuses on lively, social, and political issues that shaped the attitudes of the people and the culture of the society. Backtracking Through Georgetown also touches on long-standing Guyanese traditions and the immigrant experience of the Guyanese in Brooklyn.

Mr. Browne’s intent in writing this novel was to preserve an integral part of Guyana’s history. It is essentially the story of the Guyanese people who came of age in the 1970s, especially the ones who, like the author, started out life in the tenement yards of Georgetown and strove unceasingly to become members of the city’s bourgeois. Thus, it is also the story of dispossessed people all over the world who share a similar, horrendous circumstance of abject poverty and oppression.

Backtracking Through Georgetown is the author’s honest account of his life and the lives of the majority of Georgetown’s citizens during the time period discussed in the novel. The author’s ironic style of writing gives the text a light tone, which interestingly does not detract from its serious subject matter. It also exudes a nostalgic quality that is quite refreshing and will provide readers with added enjoyment through their identification with its characters and events. According to Mr. Browne, this novel will also give the people of Guyana an authentic account of their history. It will also serve as a deterrent to those who constantly seek to deconstruct the history of the Guyanese people.
