The Increased Necessity of Augmenting the Teaching of Commonly Used English Language Idioms, Clichés, Proverbs, Slang Words, and Expressions with Context Examples in the ESL Academic Setting
by Darold Edw. Footé

The need for increased awareness of the necessity and function of incorporating into ESL curriculum commonly used English language idioms, clichés, colloquialisms, proverbs, slang words, and expressions is crucial. This research will reduce the number of unintentional, potentially detrimental, and misunderstood words or statements spoken in the ESL setting by native English-speaking ESL teachers and provide the ESL facilitator and students flexibility in communicating English with a wide array of variations.

The native English-speaking ESL teacher and the Spanish-speaking ESL students in Puerto Rico and other multi-lingual countries, elementary, secondary, and post-secondary ESL levels, are the targeted population.

About the Author

The author is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and is an international Christian pastor, Bible teacher, public speaker, elementary, secondary, and higher education educator throughout the eastern United States and the Caribbean. He resides in Puerto Rico, where he has also worked as an ESL educator, dean of students, educational administrator, and professor of English at two prestigious universities.

His early studies were at the University of Pittsburgh, post baccalaureate ESL training from Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico, M.Ed. from Cambridge College in Cambridge, Mass., and presently he is in simultaneous pursuit of the PMC-EM (Post Masters Certificate in Enrollment Management) and Ph.D. in education from Capella University in Minneapolis, MN.
