by Pascal J. Schaller

Pascal J. Schaller (1924-2005) was a Capuchin Franciscan friar who served as a priest, teacher, librarian and chaplain in Pittsburgh, the city of his birth, and in nearby Butler County, Pennsylvania, for nearly sixty years. From his first year at St. Fidelis Seminary in 1940 until one month before he died in February 2005, this humble friar wrote over 1,500 poems which remained unpublished at his request until this first edition of works selected by confreres and friends with whom he ministered.

Father Pascal's love of languages and words brought him much joy as a teacher of Latin, Greek and German to hundreds of seminarians over the years. By day, he drilled students on verb conjugations and all aspects of grammar and word origins. By night, he wrote poetry on topics as varied as "Questions for a Tree" and "I Need a Crucifix." He dated each poem using a year-month-day convenention and indexed each with a sequential number to track the vast collection, some handwritten, some documented on old-fashioned typewriters, and some composed on his beloved personal computer which he affectionately referred to as "his beast."
