by Wilma Blenman-Carrington

Wilma Blenman-Carrington was born on the island of Barbados, West Indies, also known as “Little England.” She was the third child, second girl, born to Oliver and Gertrude Blenman. Wilma grew up in the main city of Barbados. The Bible was the law in her house. They did as they were told. Fighting and screaming were forbidden, and religion took precedence over everything else. Playing outdoors on Sundays was not permitted. This was considered a holy day.

It was a joy to go to school. Schools were named after churches. There were no mixed schools. Girls went to an all-girls school, and boys went to an all-boys school. Children wore uniforms, and some still do. It was a beautiful sight to see the children in uniform; it gave the author a feeling of unity.

After graduating from school, Wilma attended music lessons and dressmaking classes. These were the trades she loved. Married with two children, she emigrated to the United States in August 1970. This was a great experience and challenge for her. Her relatives taught her a lot about American history.

Wilma was the president of the Board of Trustees of Bethel Community Church for many years until she resigned in December 2000. She is the founder of the Bethel Theater. She wrote, directed, and played a role in a number of plays and many other fundraisers for the church.

In 1998 Wilma received the Editor’s Choice Award in poetry for outstanding achievement in poetry. She was also honored by the Staten Island Council of Churches.
