This book is about a young girl and her brother, who has mental retardation. This story focuses on her struggle to accept his difference. Throughout the story, Willena, the main character, is often asked what is wrong with her brother. She is in the fifth grade, and her younger brother, Sam, attends the same elementary school with her. She loves her brother but wishes everyone would see Sam as she does. In the beginning of the story, Willena is at times ashamed of her brother. At the story’s conclusion, she understands that Sam has mental retardation and that should not change her love for him. At times in our society, individuals are afraid of what they don’t understand. This children’s book teaches and emphasizes the importance and difference as well as provides an approach for helping children understand mental retardation. Also, mental retardation affects every individual in the family. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Terrienna Cullins is the director of a private school in Texas. She has a master’s degree in psychology from Abilene Christian University. She had her first literary work published in Treasures of the Wind at the age of sixteen. Terrienna has been writing since she was a young child. She has had several poems featured in literary anthologies and received a Sokoyah Poet Award in 1995. She has several articles on early child education published on preschool websites, and she resides in Texas with her husband and son.
